For the third consecutive year, Charleston has been named the No. 1 city in the United States and Canada by readers of Travel & Leisure magazine.
 
The Holy City edged out New Orleans, which took second place, followed by Savannah, Santa Fe, N.M., San Francisco, Quebec City, Chicago, New York City, Victoria, British Columbia, and Asheville, N.C. The city is noted as being in the Hall of Fame, meaning it has appeared on the list for at least 10 years in a row.
 
“It’s not easy to win anything three years in a row, but Charleston clearly keeps on delivering one of the most satisfying travel experiences in the United States and the world,” Travel & Leisure editor Nathan Lump said in a statement. “Now more than ever it’s great to see T&L readers recognize what’s so special about the city, from terrific food to historic architecture to a local population that exudes hospitality.”
 
Charleston also took the No. 2 spot on the magazine’s top 10 worldwide list, behind only Kyoto, Japan.
 
The only U.S. city on the worldwide list, Charleston consistently charmed readers with its “quintessential antebellum aesthetic and old-fashioned Southern hospitality,” Travel & Leisure said.
 
“Charleston is endowed with many attractive attributes — be it the sunny weather and raw natural beauty or the grand tradition of Lowcountry cuisine,” Dan Blumenstock, chairman of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said in a statement. “No matter what compelling reason draws a visitor to the Charleston area, all visitors have the chance to experience the warmth and genuine hospitality put forth by the local community.”
 
In addition the city’s recognition, several Lowcountry hotels were also included on Travel & Leisure listsWentworth Mansion,French Quarter InnPlanters Inn, and The Vendue took the top four spots, respectively, on the Top Small City Hotels in the Continental U.S. list. Market Pavilion Hotel took the No. 6 spot.
 
Wentworth Mansion also garnered the No. 35 spot on the worldwide Top Hotels Overall list, along with French Quarter Inn at No. 77.
 
Kiawah Island was named the fifth-best island in the continental U.S. and Canada, and The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort earned the No. 19 position on the list of best resorts in the continental U.S.
